EMDR Therapy in Houston, TX
When talk therapy just isn’t enough
Some things don’t heal just by talking about them.
Maybe you have all the awareness in the world, but your heart still feels like it’s beating out of your chest or you freeze in place when someone raises their voice. Logically, your brain knows you’re safe but your body can’t get on board.
Some memories and experiences are stored where words can’t reach them but EMDR is designed to do just that.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a research-backed form of therapy originally developed for trauma, and it works differently than talk therapy.
When something overwhelming happens, especially early in life, or repeatedly through time, your brain can’t file that memory away properly sometimes. It stays raw footage, unedited. Years later, a certain tone of voice or a slammed door can drop you right back into it, even when you know, logically, that you’re safe.
EMDR helps your brain finish the processing it wasn’t able to do at the time. The memory or experience stays, but the grip it has on you loosens.
How does it work?
In a session, you’ll bring up a memory, feeling, or belief while doing something rhythmic and back-and-forth such as following my fingers with your eyes, listening to alternating tones, or tapping side to side. This is called bilateral stimulation. It might sound super odd at first, but it is very effective.
